Issues surrounding service delivery in Matjhabeng Local Municipality in the Free State are expected to improve following the procurement of a new fleet of vehicles.

The Matjhabeng Municipality has recently been scrutinised for its poor state of service delivery. Joined by the Minister of Fisheries, Forestry, and Environment, Maggy Sotyu, theMatjhabeng Municipal Mayor Thanduxolo Khalipha on 29 August 2022 unveiled seven new vehicles which have been procured to service local residents. The vehicles that the municipality procured, include a refuse truck, four TLB's, and two more tractors for the use of waste and water management.

The unveiling of the new fleet comes days after Khalipha was scrutinised by the opposition party over the poor state of service delivery, with the lack of vehicles being one of the major issues. The Democratic Alliance's (DA) Matjhabeng caucus leader, Igor Scheurkogel, had called out Khalipha for the incorrect statement that he had made on his Facebook page 'The president has seen and witnessed the good work that is being done by the executive mayor'.

Scheurkogel lashed out at the poor state of service delivery in Matjhabeng Local Municipality, alleging that each ward has raw sewage running down the streets. He further stated that the entire municipality has a single serviceable TLB and cherry picker, amongst others. Scheurkogel said that the lack of equipment and maintenance led to infrastructure collapse.

Meanwhile, AfriForum posted on a Facebook page that it assisted one of the businesses in Alma Road, Matjhabeng, with the blocked municipal sewerage that has been a problem for months. One of the AfriForum members allegedly instructed one of the plumbers to rectify a section where the pipe was not correctly installed.
