Calls for urgent intervention to end Matlosana’s flooding crisis─── KEKELETSO MOSEBETSI 09:30 Thu, 03 Apr 2025

Urgent action is being demanded in response to the ongoing flood crisis in the Matlosana municipality, based in Klerksdorp.
The DA has formally written to Sanral, urging immediate intervention to address the persistent flooding issues on the N12 near Stilfontein in the North West.
The Klerksdorp-based municipality is among the municipalities that have been heavily impacted by recent heavy rains. The N12 road near Stilfontein was recently closed due to flooding.
DA spokesperson on Public Works and Roads in the North West Provincial Legislature, Freddy Sonakile, said every drop of rainfall on that road becomes hazardous, leading to accidents and endangering motorists.
“We have also called on the North West Department of Public Works and Roads to collaborate with the City of Matlosana Municipality and the Department of Cooperative Governance, Human Settlements and Traditional Affairs (Cogta) to develop a long-term solution to Matlosana’s widespread flooding crisis.
“The core issue is the city’s failing stormwater drainage infrastructure, which requires an urgent audit and a coordinated response to ensure proper drainage and prevent further flooding,” he said.
Sonakile said the municipality’s current approach – placing warning signs – does little to protect motorists, especially at night. He added that the short-term fixes like drainage pits on the side of the road have failed, and a permanent, engineered solution is necessary to safeguard both residents and infrastructure.
Sonakile further called on the municipality to take a proactive role in educating the public on the dangers of blocking drainage systems. He said individuals and businesses who contribute to clogged stormwater drains worsen flooding risks.
He also called for a robust public awareness campaign, combined with strict enforcement of existing by-laws or the development of new regulations.
