The South African Municipal Workers Union (Samwu) in the Free State has lashed out at the South African National Taxi Council (Santaco) for refusing to join the national shutdown march.

The Regional Chairperson of Samwu in Mangaung, Jimmy Motse, tells OFM News that it is plain selfish of Santaco not to join the shutdown. Motse says the taxi federation has missed out on the opportunity to be part of bigger things to come.

Hundreds of Cosatu-affiliated members are expected to march to the OR Tambo House in Bloemfontein, which houses Premier Sisi Ntombela's offices, where they will hand over a memorandum.

The planned national strike, led by Cosatu, is against high fuel prices, the energy crisis, escalating unemployment rate, and poverty.

In its Twitter feed, the South African National Taxi Council (Santaco) says despite numerous requests to participate in the National Shutdown, they will not participate in the planned shutdown. The biggest taxi association, which commutes over a million commuters across the country, says it doesn't believe that the shutdown would yield positive results.
