Residents in the Klerksdorp-based Matlosana Local Municipality have been asked to remain calm whilst the police are on high alert following the murder of a notorious gang boss in Jouberton.
A large contingent of residents from the area this weekend raised their concerns in relation to their safety and well-being after fears of violence in the area.
According to the police spokesperson, Sababata Mokgwabone, police in the Dr Kenneth Kaunda District remain on high alert following the murder of a 40-year-old man from the so-called Al-Qaeda gang - named after the militant Islamist organisation - on Friday morning, at Extension 16 in Jouberton.
Mokgwabone says workers are advised to continue with their normal and daily responsibilities and to ignore calls to embark on illegal protests. This past weekend images of burning tyres, rocks, and rubble allegedly used to blockade streets in Phelandaba Drive, Jabulani Street, and Ntlangano respectively, did the rounds on social media.
The victim, who is said to be a member of the Al-Qaeda gang, was shot and killed by three unknown males whilst standing next to his car in the street, chatting to someone. Investigations into the matter are underway and members of the community are urged to remain calm and refrain from taking part in unlawful activities and allow the police to conduct their investigations.
Mokgwabone adds that the police are already on the ground and any acts of intimidation or threats must be reported immediately.
“We are still requesting anyone who may have information that can assist in the investigation to contact the Investigating Officer, Detective Warrant Officer Ansie du Preez on 082 856 1184 or call the South African Police Service's (SAPS) Crime Stop number: 08600 10111. Alternatively, anonymous tip-offs can be shared via MySAPS App,” he further adds.
