Six people have reportedly been arrested in the Maluti-A-Phofung Municipality in the Free State following the death of a boy during an electricity protest.

A 15-year-old boy died on Sunday during a protest after falling off a bakkie while protestors burned tyres and closed roads, demanding to speak to the Executive Mayor, Gilbert Mokotso.

SAPS spokesperson, Phumelelo Dlamini, said they responded quickly to the protest, and added that SAPS also condemns acts of violence.

“A 42-year-old foreign national male, who was the driver, has been arrested and detained on Sunday. Five more people have been arrested for public violence. The police are monitoring the situation."

Dlamini said the 42-year-old was arrested as a result of the death of the 15-year-old minor. All those arrested are expected to appear before the Phuthaditjhaba Magistrate's Court soon.
