FS ANC's IPC applauds arrest of former Matjhabeng councillor | News Article

The ANC's Interim Provincial Committee (IPC) in the Free State has applauded the police after they made a breakthrough in the murder case of Piet Moletsane, who was a ward councillor candidate in Meloding, Virginia at the time of his death last year.

This comes after the arrest of a former Matjhabeng ward councillor and former member of the mayoral committee, as well as two other suspects who are allegedly linked to the murder of Moletsane.

The former Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs (Cogta) MEC and current IPC spokesperson, Oupa Khoabane, says the incident shocked the army of ANC volunteers as the murder took place at a crucial time for the party.

In his statement, Khoabane adds that the arrest of the suspects came at a time when the IPC interacted with former ANC President, Thabo Mbeki, who made an observation that since 1994, the party has attracted opportunists and criminals who use their ANC membership to pursue their private interests.

Khoabane says that the arrest of the suspects will bring back hope to the community of Matjhabeng and the Free State, and will also send a strong message to all the criminals that the long arm of the law shall catch up with them.

He had stated at the time that the killing cannot be linked to any political squabble and had requested the police to work overtime in finding the perpetrators.

Meanwhile, OFM News previously reported that scores of youth from different towns in Matjhabeng were picketing outside the Virginia Magistrate's Court on Wednesday.

This, as the alleged mastermind Jan Liphoko - former Matjhabeng ward councillor - appeared before the court. The case was postponed to 13 May 2022 whilst he remains in police custody and will be appearing with the other suspects in the next court appearance.
