Former ward councillor arrested in Free State | News Article

A former ward councillor and two accomplices have been arrested for allegedly murdering a ward councillor candidate in Meloding, at Virginia in the Free State.

Police spokesperson, Motantsi Makhele, says that the police discovered that the two suspects were allegedly involved in the murder of Piet Moletsane, who was shot and killed in 2021 while leaving a tavern where he was working. Makhele says the deceased was active in politics and was one of the ward councillor candidates before he was shot.

He says investigations that were conducted successfully led to the arrest of two suspects aged 31 and 34. According to Makhele, two suspects were allegedly hired as hitmen. He says further intensive investigations led to the arrest of the 44-year-old former ward councillor. Makhele says that the 44-year-old has allegedly been linked as the mastermind in the murder and he will appear before the Virginia Magistrate's Court on Wednesday, while other suspects remain in police custody.
