North West Education concerned over learner numbers─── KEKELETSO MOSEBETSI 09:55 Wed, 06 Apr 2022
The North West Department of Education has raised its concern over the number of learners enrolled in some schools.
This after the MEC for Education in North West, Mmaphefo Matsemela, visited schools in the Moses Kotane Local Municipality on Tuesday.
The spokesperson for Education in the province, Elias Malindi, says that Matsemela will be meeting with parents and members of School Governing Bodies (SGBs) to convene over 11 schools that were discovered to have less than 100 registered learners.
He says Matsemela is worried that these schools could hamper the provision of quality education in the province. Malindi reiterated that the department cannot continue with schools that have less than 100 learners enrolled.
"In cases like these, education of our learners is compromised as we can't have teachers teaching in multiple streams of subjects as other schools with higher enrolment. Just last year, one school in Makgong had eight learners in grade 12 and only six passed. When a school has higher enrolment, schools can afford learners with subject options towards their career of choice," adds Malindi.
Malindi says that the North West Department of Education was, however, satisfied after the first day of the reopening of schools in the province.
