A former North West traffic official is only now facing the music for knocking over a pedestrian in Rustenburg in 2016, leaving him wheelchair-bound.
Spokesperson for the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) in the North West, Henry Mamothame, says the official in question, Levy Ikaneng, is suspected to have been driving under the influence when he knocked the unnamed pedestrian over in April 2016.
The incident occurred in the Tlhabane township, Rustenburg.
Ikaneng, who is the husband to a senior magistrate, reportedly refused to give blood/breath samples on the day of the accident - he, however, was charged.
Things took a turn when his case was mysteriously closed without being handed over to the NPA for prosecution.
Following complaints by the family of the now wheelchair-bound pedestrian, the case was reopened and the charges reinstated.
Ikaneng was apprehended and appeared in the Bafokeng Magistrates’ Court this week. He was released out on a warning and the case was postponed to 20 April 2022.
