Four suspects who allegedly instigated public violence during protests near Winburg in the Free State, are to appear in court on Thursday.

Free State police spokesperson Stephen Thakeng tells OFM News that the arrested suspects include a former Speaker; an employee of the mayor's office; a former contractor and a community leader from Theunissen. He says their arrests follows a tip-off from an employee of Maximum Notion Security Services.

OFM News previously reported on service delivery protests that erupted in places such as Theunissen, Winburg, Brandfort and Verkeerdevlei, which caused instability last year.

This worsened when President Cyril Ramaphosa decided to go to Botshabelo on Human Rights Day instead of Winburg, as originally planned.
