The South African National Blood Service (SANBS) asks blood donors to donate and save three lives this Black Friday.

Every unit of donated blood can save at least three lives as blood is separated into red blood cells, plasma, and platelets.

SANBS will host its Red Saturday big bleed on Saturday (30/11) to collect at least 5,000 units to lessen the strain on the blood supply during the busy holiday season.

“This Red Saturday, we’re going to paint towns and cities red, join the SANBS in a record-setting challenge at participating blood donation sites across the country,” said Head of Donor Relations Free State and Northern Cape Jana Wallace.

“Red Saturday forms part of SANBS summer campaign which aims to raise awareness about the importance of regular blood donation and to encourage first-time donors to make donating a life-long practice.”

The simplest reason to donate blood is to help save the lives of patients needing blood transfusions, she said.

The Red Saturday big bleed will also occur in participating malls in Central South Africa.

“Regular blood donations have health benefits for donors, such as improved heart health and the monitoring of iron levels, by participating in blood drives, young people not only contribute to saving lives but also raise awareness among their peers,” said Wallace.

Red Saturday follows Black Friday and SANBS encourages people to take part with the same enthusiasm as the big shopping day, she said.

The Red Saturday campaign runs from 09:00 to 16:00 in all participating malls.
