Residents of Mangaung in the Free State have taken matters into their own hands, with the hope of restoring their deteriorating city.
The spokesperson of Mangaung Concerned Community (MCC), Themba Zweni, says residents have decided to volunteer their services to save the metro that has deteriorated, allegedly due to corrupt officials that are in leadership positions.
Speaking with OFM News, Zweni said that the municipality and the provincial government have failed residents for years and this has left them frustrated.
“We know for a fact that for the past 10 or so years, this bickering and looting that has been happening in this municipality - no one has attempted to stop it. Members of the community are going to do that and we are also saying that more people are willing to volunteer their services to save this municipality. On Monday, we will be taking another group of volunteers who will be ensuring that they attend to water and sanitation challenges,” adds Zweni.
He also said that the community cannot tolerate the state Mangaung finds itself in, leading to the community’s decision to take action. OFM News previously reported on violent disruptions that erupted at the metro’s headquarters earlier this week, leading to one employee being injured.
Meanwhile, the spokesperson of the Metro, Qondile Khedama, said the metro’s executive mayor, Mxolisi Siyonzana, is currently on a mission of ensuring a social contract that will bring together all the relevant stakeholders and communities to address service delivery issues and build a local economy that creates jobs and sustains businesses.
