NW municipality hoping for economic boost | News Article

The Mahikeng Local Municipality in the North West is hoping for an economic boost after hosting a consul of the highest rank, who heads the United States' Consulate General in Johannesburg.

The municipality, together with the provincial government, welcomed the US Consul General in South Africa, Vincent Spera, earlier this week. The Mahikeng mayor, Tshepiso Mphehlo, said that the municipality and the province are encouraged by Spera’s visit and he hopes that the city will be rebuilt to become one of the centres of attraction in the country.

“We are in a high need to change the face of Mahikeng with road rehabilitation and stormwater drainage systems, wastewater treatment plant, a sanitation rehabilitation programme, refuge removal, a proper waste management system, electrification of the town - including the street lights in urban areas, and recreational facilities, which includes parks and public swimming pools, amongst others, and lastly, the revitalisation of small businesses through grant funding,” he said.

Mphehlo adds that if they were to get the above-mentioned in order, Mahikeng will be a development hub and world-class city of choice.
