Northern Cape wife jailed for murder of hotelier husband─── 12:23 Mon, 15 Nov 2021
Northern Cape wife, Suretha Brits, has been jailed for 25 years for masterminding the murder of her husband, well-known Pofadder hotelier, Leon Brits.
The National Prosecuting Authority says she was sentenced in the Circuit High Court sitting in Upington on Monday for murder and robbery.
NPA regional spokesperson, Mojalefa Senokoatsane, said Brits pleaded guilty to both counts and made a plea in terms of section 105 A of the Criminal Procedure Act 51 of 1977.
“The accused agreed that she was not forced into making submissions about her role in the planned killing of her husband,” he said.
Brits’ body was found in a swimming pool at one of their properties on 20 October last year.
Shortly after the murder, Suretha wrote several posts on Facebook expressing her grief and sadness following the brutal murder of her beloved husband.
Senokoatsane says Suretha was convicted and sentenced by Judge Mpho Mamosebo on both counts and was sentenced to 25 years direct imprisonment on the count of murder and 15 years imprisonment on the count of robbery with aggravating circumstances.
He said the 15-year robbery sentence will run concurrently with that of the murder charge.
The trial of the two co-accused in this matter, Amatle Bareki (25) and Enrich Williams (35), will start on 22 of November 2021, in the Circuit High Court in Upington.
They are facing several charges, including the murder of Leon Brits and the robbery with aggravating circumstances.
