The two Northern Cape accounting officers employed at the Department of Health, who were arrested by the Hawks for alleged Covid-19 Personal Protective Equipment procurement fraud, were released on R20 000 bail each.
The department's head (HOD) and Chief Financial Officer (CFO ) - Dion Garvey Theys and Mosimanagape Daniel Gaborone - were arrested by the Hawks on Monday. They were arrested for allegedly awarding contracts amounting to R43 million to two companies without following prescribed procurement procedures in 2020.
Meanwhile, the Hawks provincial spokesperson, Nomathandoza Mnisi, says the two appeared before the Kimberley Magistrate’s Court on Monday to face charges of fraud and contravention of the Public Finance Management Act. Their case was postponed to 27 September 2021.
Mnisi says a thorough probe by the Hawks Serious Corruption Investigation team led to the arrests. Meanwhile, the Provincial Head of Northern Cape Major General Kholekile Galawe has lauded the Hawks for the arrest.
“The Hawks will continue to perform their investigative functions without fear or favour regardless of the position or status of the person involved.”
