Free State government drives tourism revival with Saamtrek event─── KEKELETSO MOSEBETSI 11:33 Sun, 15 Dec 2024
The Free State government is ramping up efforts to rejuvenate its tourism sector, hosting large-scale events to attract visitors and spotlight the province as a key destination.
On Saturday (14/12) the Department of Economic, Small Business Development, Tourism, and Environmental Affairs (Destea), in collaboration with stakeholders, hosted the third edition of the Saamtrek Festival at Kroonpark in Kroonstad.
The festival drew over 5,000 attendees, who enjoyed a variety of activities, including swimming, outdoor movie screenings, and bike rides. Families and individuals came together to celebrate the spirit of unity and leisure, marking a significant boost for the province’s tourism initiatives.

Speaking at the event, Free State Destea MEC Ketso Makume highlighted the dual purpose of the festival.
“We organised communities from Fezile Dabi and Lejweleputswa districts to celebrate with us. On Friday, we celebrated SMMEs and students who have participated in tourism activities. Saturday’s Saamtrek Festival symbolised ‘pulling together’ – bringing people, activities, and opportunities into one space,” Makume explained.

Families and children were treated to an array of recreational options, including camping, braais, and play areas, while parents relaxed in the serene atmosphere of Kroonpark.
Makume emphasised the department’s vision to position the Free State as a top-tier tourist destination, not just a pass-through province.
“We want everyone in the Free State to explore and enjoy their local attractions. Kroonpark is a place where people find joy, peace, and happiness. The turnout far exceeded our expectations, reaffirming that Free State is a destination worth visiting,” he said.
More activities are in place with the Springbok Reconciliation Day event at the Gariep Dam Open Park on Monday (16/12). The event will take place from 10:00 to 19:00, offering live music performances, DJ sets, dam wall tours, boat cruises, and a game drive at Wash Bank River Lodge.
The events are part of a broader strategy to revive tourism in the province, provide platforms for local businesses, and foster economic growth through increased visitor numbers.
Makume concluded by urging Free State residents and visitors alike to embrace the province’s natural beauty and diverse attractions.
