Early indications are that four shacks have been destroyed and 30 houses have been flooded community members of Masimong, Phuthaditjhaba, in the Free State, as a result of the recent heavy rain.
At Qwaqwa in the Free State, the coordinator of the Thabo Mofutsanyana Disaster Management Team, Sthembiso Mthombeni, says their rescue team assisted in evacuating people whose houses were flooded. In Matsikeng, three houses were destroyed and in Slovo Park nine houses were flooded.
“No injuries or fatalities have occurred,” says Mthombeni. He further adds emergency personnel are still trying to assist and evacuate people who are affected by the flooding.
Leholohonolo Thobela of the South African Weather Services (SAWS) says people can expect a 60% chance of rain and showers in the north-eastern parts of the province on Friday. Heavy rainfall is expected throughout the weekend and can possibly cause more flooding, he adds.
In a tweet, the SAWS issued a Yellow Level 4 warning for Disruptive Rain in the eastern parts of the Free State for Thursday, set to remain in place until Friday evening.
