Opposition weighs in on NW Legislature’s position─── KATLEHO MORAPELA 14:58 Tue, 12 Jan 2021
The North West Legislature needs to ensure the Chairperson of Committee's position is filled as soon as possible. This is according to the DA in the province.
The party says the Provincial Legislature has been without the Chair of Chairs for months, without any signs of a new appointment anytime soon. DA North West Chief Whip, Freddy Sonakile, says the position has been vacant since the former Chair of Chairs, Mmoloki Cwaile, was appointed as MEC for the Department of Cooperative Governance, Human Settlements and Traditional Affairs (COGHSTA) in November last year. Sonakile says the role played by the Chair of Chairs is crucial to the functioning of the legislature and its oversight role. He alludes that no attempt has been made to fill this position due to the ANC factional battles and that the DA has now written to Speaker Sussana Dantjie requesting her to urgently convene a sitting that will see to it that the position gets filled.
Meanwhile, the spokesperson for the Provincial Legislature, Namhla Luhabe, is yet to respond to OFM News’ inquiry.
