Activist happy about GBV awareness─── 11:35 Wed, 16 Dec 2020
A Gender based violence survivor and activist, who lost a child when her boyfriend drove into a speeding truck, is happy that awareness campaigns in Orange Farm near Vereeniging in Gauteng, are helping to end Gender Based Violence (GBV).
Sophy Semo, activist and founder of Non-profit organization “Women in Motion” however wishes Government can intervene in fighting the scourge, adding this is because her home of Orange Farm near Vereeniging, is listed as one of the GBV hotspots in Gauteng in 2020.
Her organisation also works as mediator in domestic disputes, and offers support to victims and survivors.
She tells OFM News that, following multiple community campaigns, some of the abusers are now joining the effort to fight violence against women and children.
In September two minors were killed and their bodies discovered in the street by community members. A suspect in the matter will appear in the Vereeniging Magistrate's court again on February 11 next year.
Meanwhile, she remains in custody at the Johannesburg female prison.
Semo says more still need to be done to win the fight against GBV.
