Questions are mounting on whether the former mayor of the Mangaung Metropolitan Municipality, Olly Mlamleli, can make a surprise comeback after being voted out of her position.

The controversial former mayor was ousted following a closed ballot vote last week. Opposition parties in the council are trying to wrap their heads around what the standing rules and orders of the council say about a re-nomination.

The parties are reacting to the possibility that pro-Mlamleli Councillors could push for her re-nomination in three months’ time, as ANC looks to crack the whip on those who voted Mlamleli out.  The Freedom Front Plus’ Elizabeth Synman Van Deventer is of the opinion that Mlamleli cannot be re-elected but says the party is waiting for a legal opinion to prevent such a re-election if the need arises. However, the EFF's Paulnita Marias says she can only make her come back if re-elected according to the council processes.

The DA explains that if Mlamleli were to be re-elected as the mayor before three months lapse, according to the Standing Rules and Orders of the Council it will be through a point on agenda in terms of the Municipal Structures Act - and not through a motion.

The ANC provincial spokesperson, Thabo Meeko, says following the removal of the mayor, the ANC in the province will investigate members who voted with the opposition.

The Council Speaker is expected to announce a new date to formally declare the results regarding the vote to remove of Mlamleli.
