A tavern owner in Bloemfontein has been arrested for attempted murder after allegedly shooting a man he accused of having an affair with his wife.
According to the Free State police report, the incident occurred on the evening of Saturday (19/4) at a newly opened tavern in Phase 6.
The victim (44) was reportedly at the establishment around 20:30 when he was confronted by the tavern owner. An argument ensued, during which the tavern owner accused the man of being romantically involved with his wife.
It is alleged that the confrontation escalated, and the suspect discharged a firearm, shooting the victim in the right arm. Free State police spokesperson Mahlomola Kareli confirmed that officers were called to a local hospital shortly after 01:00 on Sunday morning (20/4), where the victim had been admitted for treatment of gunshot wounds.
The suspect was arrested shortly afterward, and police have since confiscated his licensed firearm as part of the ongoing investigation. “The man was taken into custody and is facing a charge of attempted murder,” said Kareli. “He is expected to appear before the Bloemfontein Magistrate’s Court on Tuesday, 22 April 2025.”
The victim is reported to be in a stable condition, and police are continuing with investigations.
