Cigarette smuggler remanded in custody─── LUCKY NKUYANE 06:54 Thu, 23 Jul 2020
A 48-year-old suspect who was arrested for smuggling illicit cigarettes worth over R4 million, has appeared before the Zeerust Magistrates' Court.
Hawks provincial spokesperson, Tlangelani Rikhotso, confirmed that Levy Katebe appeared in court yesterday and was remanded in custody.
Rikhotso says Katebe will return to the same court next Wednesday for a formal bail application.
The 48-year-old was arrested at the Kopfontein port of entry near Zeerust for being in possession of 152 boxes of cigarettes.
This, after he entered the country from Zambia via Botswana with a Gauteng-registered truck.
Katebe is apparently due to appear for a similar offence in the Lephalale, Magistrate’s Court in Limpopo next month.
His arrest comes after police in Limpopo also arrested two foreign nationals, aged 36 and 44, on Monday at the Beitbridge border post between South Africa and Zimbabwe for allegedly smuggling illicit cigarettes worth nearly R7 million.
