Four die during collision at Phuthaditjhaba | News Article

At least four people have lost their lives following a collision between a truck carrying an unspecified number of water tanks and a minibus taxi in the Free State a short while ago.

The provincial Emergency Medical Services (EMS) spokesperson, Sipho Towa, says the two collided on the S-Bend in Tsheseng while en route to Phuthaditjhaba near Qwaqwa. He says the four people were declared dead on the scene while two people suffered critical injuries during this accident. He adds that another two people suffered moderate injuries and another two suffered minor injuries. It's not yet clear if the truck was delivering tanks related to the 1700 tanks set to alleviate the lack of water supply to resident in the area, as announced by the minister of water and sanitation, Lindiwe Sisulu, over the weekend.

Sisulu previously said the Free State was among two provinces in South Africa set to receive water tanks to alleviate the lack of water supply to desperate communities. This follows after the country embarked on a national 21-day lockdown to prevent the spreading of the coronavirus in the country.

The Human Settlements, Water and Sanitation Minister, Lindiwe Sisulu said 1700 tanks will be sent to the FS. Addressing the nation on Saturday afternoon 28 March 2020, Sisulu said 41 000 tanks have already been prepared to be sent to the rest of the country. Communities in Qwaqwa, in the ailing municipality of Maluti-A-Phofung, raised concerns with the lack of water supply in that area recently during waves of protests.

Towa says the patients were transported to the Manapo Hospital in Phuthaditjhaba.
