Half a million apply to join SAPS─── 16:22 Mon, 03 Feb 2020
The South African Police Service (SAPS) has received over 500 000 applications for its police training programme.
The police recently embarked on a nationwide recruitment drive in an effort to bolster crime-fighting efforts.
Spokesperson Athlenda Mathe says the police is currently screening candidates who qualify for the Basic Police Learning Development Programme (BPLDP).
She says some candidates have undergone psychometric assessments to measure their emotional stability.
"Additionally, the applicant's level of integrity is also measured, which aims to determine the susceptibility of an individual towards corrupt activities.”
According to the SAPS website, selected candidates will earn R3 175 monthly for the first 10 months and R10 307 once they are permanent SAPS employees.
Police Minister Bheki Cele has placed the police officer to citizen ratio at 1 to 383, which is far less than the international standard of 1 to 220.
