Maluti-A-Phofung to elect Mayor, Speaker and Chief Whip─── OLEBOGENG MOTSE 10:30 Thu, 05 Sep 2019
The Maluti-A-Pofung municipal council in the Free State is on Thursday expected to elect its Mayor, Speaker and Chief Whip.
This comes just over a year after the ANC expelled 16 of its Councillors in the area for siding with the opposition last year. On August 28, the municipality had its long awaited by-elections, which resulted in the ANC losing ten of the fifteen wards up for grabs on the day.
The ten wards went to the ousted Councillors who had stood as independents in the by-elections. It is yet to be revealed what time the council sitting will be begin.
MEC of Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs (Cogta) in the province, Thembeni Nxangisa tells OFM News, today marks the beginning of a long recovery for the embattled municipality. First up on the list of things to do for the new Mayor, is the selection of the Mayoral Committee, paving the way for the different departments at the municipality.
Prior to the removal of former Mayor, Vusi Tshabalala, service delivery in Maluti-A-Phofung came to a grinding halt over financial constraints and allegations of rampant corruption. The municipality was as a result placed under administration.
Having had survived several motions of no confidence brought against him in Council, Tshabalala was recalled by the Free State Provincial Task Team (PTT) in early May 2018, along with the Speaker, Malewatle Nthedi and Chief Whip, Mmoledi Moloi.
FS ANC Spokesperson, Thabo Meeko told OFM News after the three officials were recalled, the PEC settled on individuals that they wanted to be appointed in those positions. By defying the PEC and voting with the opposition for Gilbert Mokotso in June 2018, the Councillors “transgressed the constitution of the ANC” stressed Meeko at the time.
