Hospital unit in Welkom closes down─── 08:45 Sun, 11 Aug 2019
The Multi-drug Resistant Tuberculosis unit at Kopano Old Provincial Hospital in Welkom, in the Free State, is closing down and patients will be transferred to Thaba 'Nchu soon.
This was confirmed by Health District Manager, Mohlophehi Nkala, who shared that staff should not worry about their employment as they will be transferred to other hospitals within the Lejweleputswa district.
Head of the Health Department in the Free State, David Motau, stated that a decision was made by the department and the Risk Assessment Management to close down the unit as the building is in bad condition.
He also pointed out that there are limited beds available for patients and that they, at times, release patients due to insufficient space to accommodate new patients.
The hospital was officially opened in 2011 by former Premier of the Free State, Ace Magashule, and can accommodate up to 34 Multi-drug Resistant Tuberculosis patients.
