DA threatens court action over Mlamleli’s removal─── PULANE CHOANE 14:56 Thu, 08 Aug 2019

The Democratic Alliance in the Mangaung region have threatened to take the Mangaung Metropolitan Municipality to court in the DA’s latest attempts to have Mangaung’s Executive Mayor, Olly Mlamleli, removed.
This was revealed earlier today at a briefing held by the party’s head office in Bloemfontein, Free State. This comes after the party earlier in May this year filed a Motion of No Confidence (MONC) in Mlamleli, following which Siyonzana in June then allegedly stated that he would not be filing the motion as it was allegedly too vague.
Kopane says court action will be the party’s last resort in an effort to try and have Mlamleli removed from office. “Simultaneously, we will again write to both the Minister of Cooperative Governance, the MEC for Cooperative Governance, and National Treasury to demand, on behalf of the residents of Mangaung that the administration of the Metro be taken away from the City Manager and placed in the hands of an administrator who must be willing and able to put the necessary measures in place to turn this ship around,” Kopane says.
The opposition party lists a number of reasons to get rid of Mlamleli, among which was the Municipality’s recent rating downgrade by Moody’s Rating Agency, poor service delivery in the metro and poor governance. The ANC in the region also last week expressed their unhappiness with Mlamleli’s leadership, with the ruling party citing lack of infrastructure projects, jobs and poor service delivery in the city as some of the reasons for their unhappiness.
Denying the rumours that the party intends to have Mlamleli recalled, the party in the region’s Lulama Titi-Odili told OFM News that what the party did was make recommendations to the Provincial Executive Committee (PEC), which is the highest decision-making body in the province, saying that the PEC was the one which can decide whether or not someone can be recalled.
This is not the first time Mlamleli’s ability as the executive mayor of the metro has been questioned as in August last year, she survived a motion of no confidence that was levelled against her by the Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) in the region. The EFF’s Baba Sebolao at the time told Bloemfontein Courant that they filed the motion owing to their belief that Mlamleli is incompetent as a leader, citing the fact that the metro does not pay its service providers on time, the lack of service delivery, particularly with regards to refuse collection, as some of the reasons for their view. Mlamleli survived the motion owing to the fact that ANC Councillors outvoted the EFF and other opposition parties in the metro, including the Democratic Alliance (DA) and the Congress of the People (Cope).
