During a media briefing at the party’s headquarters of the Kaizer Sebothelo Building in Bloemfontein on Wednesday, the provincial secretary (SG), Paseka Nompondo, says it has become abundantly clear that there is a movement against Magashule by people with ulterior motives.

This follows after reports that the former president and SG of the party, Kgalema Motlanthe, amongst others, will lead the investigations against Magashule, Jacob Zuma, and others who are not yet known, for the alleged involvement in the formation of the African Transformation Movement (ATM). He says the investigation into the formation of ATM must not be made to be about Magashule because he says they can assure South Africans that he is not a traitor. Nompondo says Magashule’s detractors seek to politically assassinate his character and undermine the office as the SG of the party.

Nompondo says Magashule remains a loyal member of the party and therefore he cannot be involved in the formation of other organisations. He says his footsteps can be traced as a young person involved in the ANC during the party’ struggle in colonial times.

News24 claims that three sources who have direct knowledge of events have confirmed to them that Motlanthe will lead the investigation. The report further claims that Magashule is suspected of having played a key role in the formation of ATM, of which Mzwanele Manyi is the most prominent member. Evidence detailing Magashule's involvement was apparently handed to the ANC's leadership by disgruntled members within the ATM ahead of the May 8 election in an attempt to have the party removed from the ballot.
