The Mangaung Metro Municipality says the restoration processes at the Bloemfontein City Hall are progressing very well and it is certain the project will be completed by the end of the year.
The restoration is now in its second phase, with the roof to be repaired soon before refurbishments inside kicks off. Municipal spokesperson, Qondile Khedama, says material needed for this phase has been bought and some of it was imported as they were not available in the country.
Khedama says they aim to restore the hall to its original status and use the same quality material that were originally used before it caught fire in June 2017.
The matter aroused much controversy after it was set alight during a municipal strike in 2017. It was allegedly torched as a result of the Executive Mayor Olly Mlamleli’s backtrack on an agreement reached with the then striking Samwu workers.
Mlamleli, during a media tour at this heritage site last year, said all the work to be done at this heritage site was to be handled by the insurance to the tune of approximately R200 million.
She refuted allegations that it was torched as a result of her not heeding to the demands of the then striking workers.
