Transnet and trade unions are set to meet for talks at the Commission for Conciliation, Mediation, and Arbitration (CCMA) on Monday in a bid to break the deadlock on wage negotiations.

Workers began striking late last week.

They want a 13.5% pay hike while the employer offered 3%, 3,5%, or 4% depending on the job grade, but this was rejected.

Transnet's Ayanda Shezi, says the company currently employs 40 000 people and salary costs make up 66% of total operating costs.

She says it's not sustainable.

"Transnet continues to engage with organised labour, to find an amicable solution to the ongoing industrial action, which has a profoundly negative impact not only on employees and the company but on the economy as well.

"We are hopeful that the meeting will bring parties closer together in reaching an agreement which balances the needs of workers while protecting Transnet's continued sustainability."

Unions Satawu and Untu have confirmed they will be participating in the CCMA meeting.

Satawu's general secretary Jack Mazibuko says their members will continue to picket outside Transnet premises until picketing rules and an agreement have been reached.

"Every depot where there is Transnet, workers will be out and demonstrating their unhappiness about the offer that Transnet is giving."
