Vusi Zwane, the township economic development manager at non-profit company (NPC) Seriti, unpacks their flood relief programme aimed at assisting Deelpan businesses in the North West, following recent floods.

Zwane says Deelpan is an economically depressed town and the floods have only worsened the situation. On the issue of uninsured businesses in the area, the township economic development manager calls on insurance companies to make their business insurance offerings affordable for smaller establishments. He says township businesses are not forgoing insurance out of choice, they are doing so out of necessity - as they cannot afford it.

The public benefit organisation is now calling on formal and informal businesses that are still struggling to get back on their feet to apply for the relief programme. The maximum amount of assistance that an informal business can qualify for is R25 000 whereas formal businesses can receive relief going up to R250 000. He shares some of the requirements below:

The OFM News team previously reported that the Deputy Minister of Human Settlements, Water and Sanitation, Pam Tshwete, confirmed that R54.9 million has been allocated to the province to build new houses for people who were affected by floods in Deelpan and surrounding areas.

North West premier Bushy Maape on the other end tasked the provincial department of Cooperative Governance, Human Settlements and Traditional Affairs (Cogta), with securing 200 housing units for flood affected families from the Deelpan village in Tswaing.
