Foot-and-mouth disease is a severe and highly contagious viral disease and the control measures thereof have a significant economic impact on South Africa.
This is according to Dr Peter Oberem, founder, shareholder and managing director of Afrivet, who is of the opinion that the real impact of the disease is an economic one because of strict control measures by the International Animal Health Organisation (OIE). He says the impact is more as a result of the strict geographic control measures than the disease itself.
