The inaugural bi-annual International Woodwind Competition (IWC) in 2022, spearheaded by Prof. Danre Strydom and her dedicated team, marked a significant triumph. Showcasing extraordinary talent, the 2022 edition comprised three rounds, culminating in a captivating final performance with the Free State Symphony Orchestra. Jacob Schweitzer [Saxophone], Austria, and Daniel Spies [Flute], South Africa, emerged as the deserving winners of the inaugural IWC.

The Free State Symphony Orchestra is excited to present Winds of Change on 28 September 2024 at 19:30 at the Odeion, conducted by the renowned Julien Benichou. 

This dynamic concert will feature the finalists of the International Woodwind Competition as soloists, showcasing their exceptional talent and technical brilliance. The programme includes Weber’s dramatic Overture to Oberon and culminates with Schumann’s Symphony No. 4 in D minor, Op. 120, a masterpiece known for its lyrical beauty and emotional depth.
