Pretoria - Social Development Minister Bathabile Dlamini has been elected the new president of the African National Congress Women's League (ANCWL).

SABC reports the results of the league's top five leaders were announced in the early hours of this morning after over 2 700 delegates stayed up for hours to cast their votes in Pretoria.

Dlamini defeated Angie Motshekga, having lost to her at the League's 2008 Mangaung National Congress. Dlamini will be deputised by Sisi Ntombela who works under her in government as MEC for Social Development in the Free State. Ntombela was elected unopposed.

The Secretary-General position was taken by Meokgo Matuba the League's Provincial Secretary in the North West Province. Eastern Cape Transport MEC Wezile Tikana will be Matuba's Deputy with International Relations Minister Maite Nkoana-Mashabana as Treasurer General.

Additional Members of the League's National Executive Committee will be elected this morning.

The Social Development Minister beat former league president Angie Motshekga 1,537 votes to 1,081.
