Bloemfontein - About one in every 2 000 babies is born with craniofacial anomalies, many of which are congenital, resulting in lasting deformities in the bones of the skull and face.
This is according to the Netcare Foundation to which, through its corporate social investment (CSI) arm have put into place programmes to assist people with certain medical conditions.
General Manager at Netcare Mande Toubkin says these programmes are aimed to offer free medical interventions that will help alleviate the burdens faced by people afflicted with conditions like craniofacial, cleft lip and palate, and cataracts.
The Netcare Foundation was established in 2010 and has partnered with various organisations and healthcare practitioners and has since changed the lives of hundreds of South Africans afflicted with these conditions through its CSI programmes.
Criteria for acceptance
The following criteria are applicable for those looking for assistance through the Netcare Foundation’s craniofacial, sight, and cleft lip and palate programmes:
- Applicants must be unemployed or reliant on a state grant.
- If receiving an income, it should be no more than R2 000 per month. A means-of-living test will apply.
- Applicants must have no access to medical scheme or insurance cover.
- Applicants need to provide their own transport for consultations.
