Bloemfontein - South Africa’s Minister of Transport, Dipuo Peters, is currently meeting her Lesotho counterpart in Maseru. This in an effort to resolve ongoing problems in the taxi industry between local operators and their Lesotho neigbours.

Ministerial spokesperson, Jomo Khafu, says there was clear need for a high-level intervention after efforts by transport agencies from both countries failed to find an agreeable solution. Khafu says the short–term deadlock of the cross-border operators, as well as secure bilateral relations between the countries are amongst others on the agenda.

According to him the meeting is very important in an effort to avoid the taxi problem having a negative ripple effect on the general good relations between the two countries.

The high level intervention follows the recent closure of the Maseru border post at Ladybrand on two occasions because of the feud between taxi operators.
