The police in the North West has launched an investigation after the bodies of 20 unidentified men were found in Orkney outside Klerksdorp.

According to police spokesperson, Sabata Mokgwabone, it is alleged that the men are illegal miners, commonly known as “zama-zamas”.

He explains that on Monday 14 June at about 19:00, five decomposed bodies were discovered outside an old mine ventilation shaft in Lawrence Park, Orkney.

Another 14 bodies, which were stashed in grain bags, were then discovered yesterday afternoon next to Ariston road.

"While still processing the scene, the police received information that another body was discovered where the initial five bodies were found, thus bringing the total number to 20," says Mokgwabone.

The bodies are said to have suffered severe burn wounds.

Mokgwabone further adds that the investigation includes the possibility of linking the incident to a video that was circulated on social media wherein a man, saying that his name is "Mafifi", was seen pleading for help following an apparent smoke inhalation that occurred at shaft number six.

Police appeal to anyone who may have information regarding the incident to contact the nearest police station or the Crime Stop number: 08600 10111.

Meanwhile, an autopsy will be conducted to determine the cause of death.

The investigation continues.
