Moscow - Legendary American boxer, Muhammad Ali, nicknamed “The Greatest”, has died at the age of 74.
“After a 32-year battle with Parkinson’s disease, Muhammad Ali has passed away at the age of 74. The three-time World Heavyweight Champion boxer died this evening,” Bob Gunnell, a family spokesman, told NBC on Friday.
Ali died at a Phoenix-area hospital, where he had been treated for respiratory complications for the past few days, NBC said. A funeral is planned in Ali’s hometown – Louisville, Kentucky.
Muhammad Ali, born Cassius Marcellus Clay, Jr., started training in boxing at the age of 12. He won his first world heavyweight championship in 1964, at the age of 22, and remains the only three-time lineal world heavyweight champion.
He joined the Nation of Islam and changed his name shortly after the 1964 victory.
Ali was diagnosed with Parkinson’s syndrome in 1984. The disease, which mainly affects the motor system, commonly results from head trauma from activities such as boxing. It affects the central nervous system and can lead to respiratory system complications.
