There’s more good news for Liverpool supporters, as club captain and centre-back Virgil van Dijk has officially extended his stay on Merseyside.

The Dutch defender had been the subject of speculation, with rumours suggesting he might leave Anfield at the end of the season as his contract was due to expire. However, Van Dijk has now signed a new deal that will keep him at the club for at least another two years.

Just days earlier, Egyptian star winger Mohamed Salah also put pen to paper on a new contract, securing his place at Liverpool for at least two more seasons.

However, not all the news coming out of Anfield is positive. It appears that versatile defender Trent Alexander-Arnold may be on his way to Real Madrid, while Uruguayan striker Darwin Núñez is also reportedly heading for the exit, having struggled to meet expectations and win over the fans.

Speaking to LiverpoolFC.com, Van Dijk said he never considered leaving the club, which remains firmly in the hunt for the Premiership title.

“Very happy, very proud – there are so many emotions obviously that go through my head right now speaking about it,” Van Dijk said.

“It’s a proud feeling, a feeling of joy. It’s just incredible. The journey I’ve had so far in my career – to be able to extend it by another two years at this club – is amazing, and I’m so happy.

“It was always Liverpool – that was the case. It was always in my head, it was always the plan, and it was always Liverpool.

“There wasn’t any doubt in my mind that this is the place to be for me and my family. I’m one of Liverpool. Someone called me an adopted Scouser the other day – I’m really proud to hear things like that. It gives me a great feeling.”

Meanwhile, this Sunday at 17:00, Leicester City will host the Reds in a crucial Premiership clash.
