It’s official – the Egyptian magician, Mo Salah, will continue playing for Liverpool for at least the next two seasons.

On Friday, the Liverpool winger extended his contract with the Premier League leaders until the end of the 2026/27 season.

Salah has already spent eight seasons with the Merseyside club, having joined from Roma in Italy back in 2017. Since then, he’s gone on to score 243 goals and provide 109 assists in 394 appearances across all competitions.

There had been concerns that Salah might leave the club where he has become a true legend, with his contract set to expire at the end of the current campaign.

The Reds are also still in negotiations with their captain, Virgil van Dijk, whose contract is also due to expire at the end of the season. It’s believed that these talks are well advanced, and signs are promising that the Dutch centre-back will continue playing for the club.

Salah said he wouldn’t have signed a new deal if he didn’t believe in the club’s future. “Of course, I’m very excited. We have a great team now – and we had a great team before as well. But I signed because I believe we have a chance to win more trophies and enjoy playing football,” Salah told LiverpoolFC.com

“It’s great – I’ve had my best years here. I’ve played eight years, and hopefully it’ll be ten. I’m enjoying my life and my football here. These have been the best years of my career.

“To the fans, I just want to say: I’m very, very happy to be here. I signed because I believe we can win big trophies together. Keep supporting us, and we’ll give it our all – hopefully, we’ll lift more trophies in the future.”

Liverpool boss Arne Slot also expressed his delight at keeping Salah at the club, though he declined to comment on the future of his fellow countryman, Van Dijk. “Happy, of course – he has shown at this club for so many years in a row how valuable he is to the club and the team,” said Slot.

“Like all our fans and his teammates, we’re very happy that he’s extended for two more years. And hopefully, he can show again on Sunday how important he’s been for us all season.

“For the fans, it’s a relief. I don’t think it’s a surprise for you to hear that I knew a bit more about how his contract situation was developing over the course of the season.”

Meanwhile, on Sunday at 15:00, Liverpool will take on West Ham at Anfield. The Reds need just four more wins to secure the league title.
