Marumo Gallants are upbeat and full of confidence ahead of their high-stakes Nedbank Cup semi-final clash against Orlando Pirates in Soweto on Sunday.

This marks Gallants’ second cup semi-final of the season, and this time, they’re determined to go one better.

A win this weekend would not only book them a place in the final, but also secure qualification for next season’s CAF Confederation Cup – despite their ongoing fight to avoid relegation in the league.

The last time Gallants faced Pirates, they emerged 2-0 winners in Bloemfontein. But earlier in the season, they suffered a heavy 8-1 defeat at Orlando Stadium.

Gallants’ head coach, Abdeslam Ouaddou, told OFM Sport that although a tough match awaits, his side is ready to chase silverware – and it starts with a win this weekend.

“Pirates are used to playing every three days, and they’ve got a deep squad – players who are equally fit and of the same quality,” said the former Fulham defender and Moroccan national team captain.

“We’re up against a very strong team that’s determined to defend their title. But I told my players: I think people in Johannesburg and Pretoria have had the cup long enough – it’s time to bring it back to Bloemfontein.”

Defender Trevor Mathiane, who netted the equaliser against SuperSport United in Bloemfontein on Saturday, echoed his coach’s sentiments. He said the team won’t be short on motivation, especially with a spot in continental football up for grabs.

“We’re feeling very confident going into the game. We know what we’re up against, and we’re well prepared,” said Mathiane. “There’s a lot of self-motivation. We all know what’s at stake – if we win, we qualify for CAF and get the chance to represent South Africa on the continent.

“For us, this match is like a final. It gives us two big opportunities: a place in the CAF Confederation Cup, and a shot at winning the Nedbank Cup.

“Our strikers must take every chance we create – even the half-chances. And at the back, we need to stay rock solid.”

Meanwhile, Zimbabwean international goalkeeper Washington Arubi has recovered from the finger fracture he sustained against Pirates in Bloemfontein and could make his return for the semi-final, although he has recently been on the bench.

Sunday’s clash at Orlando Stadium kicks off at 15:00. Later that evening, at 18:00, Mamelodi Sundowns will take on Kaizer Chiefs in the other semi-final.
