The ANC in the North West has expressed its sadness following the death of the MEC for Cooperative Governance, Gordon Kegakilwe.

Kegakilwe passed away due to Coronavirus-related complications on Monday. The provincial spokesperson for the party, Kenny Morolong, says Kegakilwe's death robbed the party and the people of the province of a remarkable human being whose life was fundamentally committed towards service to his people.

He described Kegakilwe as a committed servant of the people in the province.

On Monday, Premier Job Mokgoro also sent his condolences to the family and friends of Kegakilwe.

Kegakilwe passed on at a Klerskdorp health facility after suffering cardiac arrest. His death comes amidst a surge in the rate of infection and rise in the death toll among Covid-19 patients in the province.

The MEC was admitted with Covid-19 pneumonia on Sunday at the Vryburg Private Hospital and later on Monday transported to a medical facility in Klerksdorp where he reportedly passed on after several attempts to resuscitate him failed.

The ANC in the province says his untimely death occurs at a time when he was at the forefront of the fight against Covid-19 in the province.

"(Kegakilwe) will be remembered as a committed public representative whose passion for matters related to local government resulted in his appointment to the position of MEC for COGHTA during the sixth administration. (He) served the organisation in various capacities, including as ANC Regional Chairperson in the Dr Ruth Segomotsi Mompati Region, Provincial Deputy Secretary of the ANC in the province," Morolong adds.

"In his honour, the ANC will intensify the fight against Covid-19 and spare no effort in preserving human life. We convey our heartfelt condolences to his family, his loved ones and the entire membership of the ANC," he further adds.
