Councillors’ seats up for grabs in the Mamusa local municipality | News Article

Councillor seats will be up for grabs in Schweizer-Reneke in the North West as different political parties will contest each other in municipal by-elections on Wednesday.

A total of 10 seats are available. This, as Ward 16 in Moses Kotane Municipality’s councillor passed on early last year. The position has remained vacant. Also, Wards 1 to 9 in the Mamusa Municipality were dissolved last year after poor financial mismanagement that gave rise to a lack of service delivery. According to the Independent Electoral Commission (IEC), more than 31 000 registered voters will cast their votes for their favorite party to fill in the positions. Voting will take place at various voting stations including Welgeval community hall, Glaudina Library hall, and Mamusa Primary School among others.

According to News24 the authority to dissolve the entire Mamusa council had been granted and agreed to last year by the National Council of Provinces following a request from North West Cooperative Governance, Human Settlements and Traditional Affairs MEC Mothibedi Kegakilwe. Mamusa local municipality spokesperson, Vuyisile Ngesi, said in a statement that the municipality was accused of maladministration, financial mismanagement and councillors who neglected their legislative duties. Ngesi said in some instances, some councillors at Mamusa allegedly dictated who should get tenders and neglected their duties with regards to service delivery.

"The municipality is unable to render services and is on the brink of collapse. It is up to the executive council and premier to decide whether the current administrator remains at the helm or if there will be a new administrator. For now, there are no councillors in Mamusa," he added.
