A land claim had been lodged for the land where 34 mineworkers were mowed down seven years ago in Marikana near Rustenburg, one of the land claimants said on Friday.

Chairperson of the Middelkraal Development Community, Jerome Lottering, said the place is known as Middelkraal and the infamous koppie is known as Jakkalskop.

"This area here is flat because my great-grandfather worked on it, this area was our fields. My grandfather played on top of the Jakkalskop koppie.

"There are graves of my relatives near to the smelter," he said on the sideline of the seventh commemoration of the Marikana massacre.

"There were five families living here, they were dispossessed of their land in 1969 and are now scattered all over the country, some are in the Pretoria areas."

He said they were disappointed that they were never consulted as the land owner each year the Marikana commemorations were held.

"What happened here is painful, the killing of the people is painful but, it is more painful to us that we are not consulted.

"People are standing on our land and we are never consulted. This land is Middelkraal, it does not belong to the Bapo [traditional authority]."

He said the area where Lonmin offices were situated used to be the area where his great grandparents built their homes.
