The Suzuki Griquas have received a significant boost ahead of their SA Cup title defence, which kicks off next month. Former Springbok Sevens speedster Sako Makata has returned to the Peacock Blues on loan from the Stormers.

Makata quickly became a crowd favourite at Griquas last season and played a crucial role in their triumph in the inaugural SA Cup.

In addition to Makata's return, former Junior Springbok tighthead prop Corné Weilbach has also joined the team in Kimberley on loan from the Stormers.

“Being back is a great honour and privilege. It means a lot to represent this union again,” said Makata.

“I don’t think many people fully appreciate just how much this union can do for you. I’m looking forward to being back and contributing to the success of this team, whether that’s on or off the field.

“It’s a fantastic group of players. They’ve had a tough pre-season, and I know they’re eager to run out against the Leopards.”

Makata said the SA Cup is an exciting competition and is expected to be bigger, better, and even more competitive in 2025.

“I think it’s going to be a thrilling tournament, and we’re looking forward to building on last year’s success. I believe we took a step in the right direction, and we’re keen to keep that momentum going in this upcoming SA Cup. Hopefully, it will serve as a confidence booster for the rest of the year.

“We know it’s going to be a tough competition – we’re not expecting it to be the same as last year. There’s strong opposition all around, and even within our own squad, there’s healthy competition for places. So, it’s definitely going to be an exciting SA Cup.”

“Hopefully, all of Kimberley will come out to support the boys. See you out there!”

The Griquas will begin their SA Cup title defence on 7 March, taking on the Leopards at Olën Park in Potchefstroom. This match will kick-off is scheduled at 18:30.
