“We’ll adapt as needed, and I don’t think it’s a major concern. It’s just about adjusting quickly.”

The Toyota Cheetahs are optimistic that the artificial pitches in Europe will not pose significant challenges as they prepare for the EPCR Challenge Cup, which kicks off this weekend.

The Bloemfontein-based team landed in Amsterdam today ahead of their season opener against French Top 14 club Perpignan on Sunday.

While 4G or hybrid pitches are not entirely unfamiliar to the Cheetahs, they are not surfaces the team plays on regularly. Such pitches often demand adjustments, particularly in terms of grip and gameplay pace, which tends to be faster.

Managing this increased pace will be critical for the Cheetahs.

For the props, scrummaging on artificial surfaces requires attention to body positioning, form, and height. While these surfaces are new to several players, Robert Hunt, who joined the Cheetahs from the Bulls earlier this year, brings valuable experience.

The former University of Cape Town Ikeys star from Hermanus shared insights with OFM Sport, explaining that preparation is key, but adaptability on match day is equally important.

“Look, it’s definitely something we’ve considered,” Hunt said. “We’ve planned for it with adjustments like different stud lengths and types, shorter, longer, sharper, depending on what’s needed.

“Having played on these surfaces before, I know scrummaging is slightly different. You generally don’t go as low. But it depends on the specific stadium and pitch conditions.

“We’ll adapt as needed, and I don’t think it’s a major concern. It’s just about adjusting quickly.”

On the challenge of facing French teams known for their scrummaging prowess, Hunt acknowledged the test ahead but expressed confidence in the team’s preparation.

“French teams have a scrummaging technique that’s admirable. We look up to the Springboks for inspiration, but we also study the French approach. They’re typically heavy, strong, and technically skilled, so it’s a great challenge for us.

“Our focus is on refining our systems, ensuring cohesion, and committing fully to our approach. It’s all about finding the right balance and learning to adapt to their strengths.”

The Cheetahs’ match against Perpignan kicks off at 15:00 on Sunday. They will then travel to Wales to face Cardiff in their second Challenge Cup fixture next week.
