The Munster lock, Jean Kleyn, will be linking up with the Springboks in Edinburgh on Friday ahead of their End-of-Year Test against Scotland.

Kleyn, who won the Rugby World Cup with the Springboks last year has been called up to the squad following another injury setback. The Bulls captain and lock, Ruan Nortjé, has been ruled out after sustaining a leg injury on Wednesday during training.

This comes as a big blow to the in-form Nortjé and Springbok after he earlier in the week stated that for him it’s always a big deal to play for South Africa, and he treats each Test as if it could be his last.

The Springbok coach, Rassie Erasmus, confirmed that Nortjé has been ruled out while in the same breath said it’s a big opportunity for Kleyn, who played in the 2023 Rugby World Cup final against the All Blacks in Paris.

“It’s sad to lose Ruan to injury, as he’s had a fantastic season and really made a strong statement after injuries initially prompted his call-up to the squad,” said Erasmus. “He certainly grabbed the opportunity with both hands, and we wish him luck with his recovery.”

“Ruan’s injury opens the door for Jean to make a return to the national squad for the first time this season, and judging by his performances for Munster since making a comeback to the Vodacom URC combined with his familiarity of our structures and being a regular in our team last season, we are excited to welcome him back. He’s also played with most of the players in the squad and is familiar with the conditions in the UK as he’s based in Ireland, so he should slot in with ease.”

Erasmus will name his squad for the Test against Scotland on Friday afternoon. The highly anticipated Test at the Home of Scottish Rugby, Murrayfield, will kick off on Sunday at 18:10.
