Mapimpi braced for Van der Merwe challenge─── MORGAN PIEK 10:43 Thu, 07 Nov 2024
“We always play against each other in the United Rugby Championship. I’ve been watching him for a while now and think he is quite a good player.”
The Springboks winger, Makazole Mapimpi, expects a good battle this weekend when they face Scotland in Edinburgh.
One of Scotland’s biggest threats is the South African-born winger, Duhan van der Merwe, who has been linked with a move to the Stormers in the past week. Van der Merwe is a try-scoring machine for his franchise, Edinburgh, as well as Scotland, and the British & Irish Lions.
The Scots will have to make do without Darcy Graham who sustained a concussion during last week’s 57-17 win against Fiji.
The former Cheetahs speedster, Mapimpi, said Van der Merwe will be a big threat on the wing this weekend.
“I think Duhan has been playing good rugby since he moved this side in Europe and we’ve been watching him. We played against him in the Lions tour and he also plays for Edinburgh.

Mapimpi added that they had a couple of weeks of good preparation and he is just looking forward to what could be one of his last Tests against Scotland.

“We’ve had a few good weeks together now and we had great training a week in Jersey, and also this coming week.
“I think everything is going well now. We’re taking it day by day. Yeah, man, I’m looking forward to Sunday.”
The Springbok team will be named on Friday afternoon, and Sunday’s Test at Murrayfield kicks off at 18:10.
