“The moment we arrived in Bloemfontein, the moment we got into the airport was an insane moment for us. On Sunday we arrived at the airport, everyone started singing the national anthem, and that was such a special moment for us.”

The Portugal captain, Tomás Appleton, praised their fantastic support during the build-up and Test against the Springboks in Bloemfontein.

Thousands of fans came to Bloemfontein from all over to witness the exciting Os Lobos in the historic Test at the Toyota Stadium.

While Portugal lost 64-21 to a 14-man Springbok team, they played some thrilling and enterprising rugby keeping the crowd entertained.

Following the match, Appleton said the support they received was overwhelming and greatly appreciated. “The moment we arrived in Bloemfontein, the moment we got into the airport was an insane moment for us.”

“On Sunday we arrived at the airport, everyone started singing the national anthem, and that was such a special moment for us. Then coming here in a 42 000-seater stadium and seeing so many Portuguese fans, such a big Portuguese community, made us really proud.

“We were a bit disappointed not to perform in front of so many Portuguese fans. We are proud and hats off to the supporters, they were fantastic.”

The Springboks’ next test is on 10 August against the Wallabies in Brisbane in round one of the Rugby Championship.
