The Griffons were the final Central South African team to go down this weekend. The team lost big at the North-West Stadium in Welkom on Sunday afternoon.

The team from Cape Town beat the Griffons emphatically 64 – 15. Western Province scored five tries and a bonus point within the first half.

The Griffons did not give up easily and the opening minutes belonged to the home side with Moango Ngundue and Andrew Kota getting points for the hosts.  But Western Province came to play and the rest of the game belonged to them. In the first half, tries were scored for the Western Province by Angelo Davids, followed by Luke Burger and Jurie Mathee converting both.  Former Cheetah Clayton Blommetjies scored another one for the visitors, as did Johnny Roche, bringing the score to 28 – 10 at the half hour mark. Davids scored another try before the half-time mark, bringin the score to 33 – 10 at the break.

The second half were more of the same with Roche scoring another try in the 46th minute, which went uncoverted.  The Griffons got their own back in the 48th minute when Christiaan Nel went over the line to make it 38 – 15.  But the team from Cape Town was by no means done and rolling mauls provided the next two tries, both from CJ Velleman.  Roche scored his hat-trick in the 66th minute from a dropped ball in the Griffons scrum.

The Griffons stay bottom of the table with no matches won so far this tournament.  They will face the Cheethas next weekend on the 26th of July in Welkom.
